OEI-releaser och föreläsning om experimentell publicering av Nicholas Thoburn

Välkomna till en kväll om Bertolt Brechts montagebaserade bok Krigets ABC, om OEI #102-103: Photography on Edge, liksom med Nicholas Thoburn om experimentella former av politisk publicering.

På OEI editör utkommer nu Bertolt Brechts uppfordrande Krigets ABC i svensk översättning av Jörgen Gassilewski. Gassilewski läser ur boken, som introduceras av Cecilia Grönberg & Jonas (J) Magnusson. Nick Thoburn, verksam vid University of Manchester, kommer och talar om radikala publiceringsprojekt utifrån sin bok Anti-Books: Experimental Forms in Political Publishing. Under kvällen presenteras också det nya numret av OEI, #103-103: Photography on Edge, som handlar om osäkrande och osäkrad fotografi. Med utgångspunkt i 25 olika bildkompilationer föreslår fotografihistorikern och teoretikern Geoffrey Batchen i OEI-numret lika många sätt att vidga fotografihistorien och synen på vad den kan omfatta.

Nick Thoburn

Nick Thoburn is Professor of Sociology at the University of Manchester. He is author of Brutalism as Found: Housing, Form and Crisis at Robin Hood Gardens (2022), Anti-Book: On the Art and Politics of Radical Publishing (2016), and Deleuze, Marx and Politics (2003). His editorial work includes the books Objects and Materials (2014), Franco Berardi’s After the Future (2011), and Deleuze and Politics (2008), and membership of the board of the journal New Formations.

Krigets ABC

Bertolt Brechts Krigets ABC, som första gången utgavs 1955, är ett försök att lära ut ”konsten att läsa bilder”, att göra det möjligt att navigera och kritiskt reflektera över krigets mediala bildflöde. Därför vikten av ett montagearbete mellan bild och text; därför nödvändigheten att klippa ut ett visuellt material och till dessa bilder foga poetiska kommentarer som dekonstruerar deras skenbara självklarhet eller stereotypa karaktär. Detta är det brechtska sättet att initiera oss i ett mer komplext historiskt seende, där vi också kan lära oss att ställa skarpare frågor till vår egen samtids bilder.

”The published history of photography has long been motivated by a number of key principles: innovation and originality, authorship and nationality, chronology and medium specificity, technical excellence and aesthetic achievement. The folios [in OEI #102–103] offer an alternative way to regard this history. They comprise a series of repetitious fragments drawn more or less arbitrarily from across various photographic practices and genres. In every case, these folios present a photography on edge: tense, nervous, unsure of itself—at least when compared to the self-certainty we encounter in most histories of this medium. A photography on edge is a photography that escapes the usual definitions.
