FEMINIST FESTIVAL: LECTURE BY IRINA SCHMITT

As a part of Smålands Feminist Festival we have invited Irina Schmitt to hold a lecture called Power resistance and transpower.

The last decades have seen growing trans advocacy in Sweden, inspiring more progressive health care and legislation. At the same time, anti-trans rhetoric and policy increasingly limit young peoples’ access to gender affirming care and question trans women’s existence. Similar developments occur in other parts of Europe, the UK and the USA. Groups such as GENID (Gender Identity Challenge Sweden) countermand trans people’s right to self-determination and dignity, and anti-gender and other right-wing populist projects tend to use anti-trans politics to limit broader minority protections and democratic structures. How can we read and understand “trans resistance” in a context where trans lives are targeted, yet differentially affected by gender, race, class and border politics?

This evening I will reflect on some moments of resistance against trans organizing, as well as on trans resistances. I am hoping that my reflections can open up a conversation with everyone in the room.

Irina Schmitt is Senior lecturer in Gender studies at Lund University. Irina has explored negotiations of national belonging, experiences of children with LGBTI+ parents at school, equality work in academia and strategies for LGBTI+, queer justice work in schools and trans young people’s and young adults’ negotiations of their identity with the normative, nationally coded expectations in school. Irina is co-convenor of the Crip and queer seminar series at the Division of Gender studies, member of the employee network HBTQ-LU and co-editor of Tidskrift för genusvetenskap, the Swedish journal of Gender studies.
